How to Create Subcategories Under the Main Compliance and Risk Categories

To tailor your risk and compliance management process, BoardX allows you to create custom subcategories under its 13 default categories.

You can create subcategories under any of the following default categories:

  • Strategic

  • Operational

  • Financial

  • Compliance

  • Reputational

  • Market/Environmental

  • Cybersecurity

  • Legal

  • Human Resources

  • Technology

  • Process

  • Supply Chain

  • Macroeconomic


How to Create a Subcategory

Step 1: Go to Settings
Click Settings from the left-hand navigation menu.

Step 2: Open the Risk and Compliance Categories Section
Under the General heading, select Risk and Compliance Categories.

Step 3: Add a Subcategory
Click + Subcategory in the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 4: Enter Details

  • Subcategory Name: Enter a clear name (e.g., "IT System Downtime").

  • Parent Category: Select the main category this subcategory belongs under.

  • Description: (Optional) Add a short description to provide additional context.

Step 5: Save
Click Save to apply your changes.


How to Edit a Subcategory

If you need to make changes to an existing subcategory:

  • Locate the subcategory in the Risk and Compliance Categories list.

  • Click the three grey dots (more options) on the right side of the subcategory line.

  • Select Edit to update the name, parent category, or description.

  • Make your changes and click Save to apply them.

This allows you to keep your risk classification structure up to date as your organisation’s needs evolve.


What Happens Next

Your new subcategory will now be available when creating or editing Master Risks and Master Controls, allowing you to further customise how risks and controls are organised and reported across your organisation.
